Dear Members,
Well it’s the middle of October and already the island seems to be closing up and getting ready for winter.
Cala Llonga, however, still has many year round residents, who even in the cooler months, realize what a privilege it is to live here.
This summer, residents, non-resident and boat owner members alike, found that the Aparthotel in Cala Llonga proved to be a great meeting place on Friday nights. We tried to have a committee member present most weeks so that new members, of which there are many, could meet and socialize with their CL neighbours. Because it was so popular, we hope to continue the CL Fridays next year.
There have been, sadly, several deaths among our older members this year. Obviously our thoughts and sympathies go out to their families and if the CL committee can help them in any way, we will try to do so.
Chele and some of her team had a very fruitful meeting with the newly elected Mahon Council. They agreed to continue funding the CL gardeners, which is a big undertaking on their part. They also allayed our fears about the termination of the CL postal service. Mahon Town Hall, at their expense, will erect post boxes, probably behind the super market. We will then, each be charged for a post box, probably in the region of 70€. Emails and letters will be going out to all members very soon about how to acquire a post box and pay for it. More information will also be put on the web site, as and when we receive it. Anyone interested in having one should let us know as soon as possible.
Since that meeting with the new town delegates, the press announced that the rates in CL will be going up, probably by 6% and that the cadastral value of your properties will be going down by possibly 8%. Two very important facts which Mahon failed to tell our representatives. Needless to say questions will be asked and your support behind us in this matter will be of great value.
The two social events for members were well attended and turned out to be really fun nights. It is always nice to see that CL does have a great community spirit and our continued thanks go out for supporting these functions. It is very difficult to choose dates that suit everyone, so we will try and tell you of next year’s events just after Christmas.
I can tell you that we are intending to hold a “fun” bring and buy sale, on the beach in May. Many of us have houses full of unwanted items, this will be a chance to “de-clutter” and make yourself some money. Your entrance fee 10€ will be donated to a local charity. This event will only be open to CL members. If this works well, we will also hold a boat jumble the following month. All information will be available on our web site nearer the time.
We are always very interested to hear your ideas on how to attract new members and any improvements you would like to see within the CL association. We really welcome you help and your continued support to our community.
Have a great winter!
